TRIATHLON / TIME TRIAL / PREMIUM AERO

Zipp 858 NSW: a premium deep-wheel decision, made deliberately

The Zipp 858 NSW WH-858-NTLD-D1 is a 700c carbon disc-brake wheelset with an 82-85 mm Sawtooth rim profile and ZR1 SL hybrid ceramic-bearing hubs. It is the premium deep-section option in this selection for a triathlon or time-trial build where the course, conditions and rider all support that choice.

What you are buying: A complete front-and-rear wheelset. Select the rear freehub: Shimano / SRAM HG Road or SRAM XDR. Manufacturer model: WH-858-NTLD-D1.

Fitment first: Disc-brake D1 generation with ZR1 SL hubs. The checked compatibility range is 28-32 mm with appropriate ISO/TSS tires. Confirm tire approval, bike clearance, event rules and your front-wheel plan. Zipp's page gives conflicting 28/30 mm optimization statements, so no single fastest tire size is promised here.

Hookless setup: 5.0 bar wheel ceiling (approximately 72.5 psi). A lower tire- or size-specific limit may apply; a maximum is not a riding recommendation. Check current Zipp tire compatibility.

Build confidence into the plan, not just depth into the rim

The bike waiting in transition carries months of preparation with it. A premium race build brings position, tires, gearing and wheels together around the event ahead. The 858 NSW adds Zipp's deepest Sawtooth road-racing profile and current premium hubs to that picture. Choose it as part of a deliberate race setup, with time to learn how the complete bike behaves before the start.

Zipp combines its variable-depth Sawtooth shape with Hyperfoil nodes, HexFin ABLC dimpling and the ZR1 SL platform. This D1 generation has 66 engagement points. Compare those features with the 808 Firecrest or an older 858 listing, but do not treat them as a guaranteed finishing-time improvement or immunity to crosswinds.

Who should put this wheelset on the shortlist?

Choose the 858 NSW when a premium deep-rim configuration is a deliberate part of your race setup. Consider the 808 when you want to reconsider the equipment budget, and a shallower option when the front-wheel decision calls for it. Buying the top tier does not remove the need to make a rider-specific choice.

Zipp 858 NSW vs 808 Firecrest: compare the complete race setup

The 858 uses an 82-85 mm Sawtooth profile and ZR1 SL ceramic-bearing hubs. The 808 uses an 80 mm constant-depth profile and ZR1 DB. We would settle front-wheel suitability and tire compatibility first, then decide whether the NSW hardware is the upgrade you want. Neither page can responsibly guarantee an individual race result.

Compare with Zipp 808 Firecrest or Zipp 454 NSW.

Questions to answer before ordering

Does this 858 NSW use Cognition hubs?

No. This listing is the D1 version with ZR1 SL hubs. Legacy 858 descriptions can refer to Cognition, different weights or different tire guidance.

Is a deep front wheel right for every triathlon course?

No. Review the course, expected conditions, race rules and your confidence with the setup. Discuss a different front-wheel depth when those factors point away from a deep matched pair.

Is this a solid rear disc wheel?

No. It is a spoked wheelset with deep carbon rims. Disc-brake refers to the braking system; it does not mean a closed disc rear wheel.

Should I choose a 28 mm or 30 mm tire?

Both fall within the listed 28-32 mm range when the exact tire is compatible. Zipp's page currently gives different optimization statements, so we would confirm the actual tire, fit and setup rather than advertise one size as universally fastest.
