Zipp 808 Firecrest: make your deep-wheel choice before race week

The Zipp 808 Firecrest WH-808-FTLD-B1 is a complete 700c disc-brake wheelset with 80 mm carbon rims and ZR1 DB hubs. Put it on the shortlist for a triathlon or time-trial build when you want a dedicated deep-section option and a clear comparison with the more premium 858 NSW.

What you are buying: A complete front-and-rear wheelset. Select the rear freehub: Shimano / SRAM HG Road or SRAM XDR. Manufacturer model: WH-808-FTLD-B1.

Fitment first: This is a disc-brake, hookless wheelset, not a solid rear disc wheel. The checked tire range is 28-32 mm using compatible ISO/TSS tires. Confirm bike clearance, cassette, rotors and event equipment rules before ordering.

Hookless setup: 5.0 bar wheel ceiling (approximately 72.5 psi). A lower tire- or size-specific limit may apply; a maximum is not a riding recommendation. Check current Zipp tire compatibility.

Give your race bike a deliberate next step

A start line gives every training ride a destination. As the event approaches, the bike becomes part of that focus: position, tires, gearing and the wheels you will spend those miles on. The 808 Firecrest brings an unmistakable 80 mm aero profile to a disc-brake triathlon or time-trial build. Make it part of your preparation early enough to get familiar with the complete setup.

The 808 combines an 80 mm profile, 23 mm internal width and Zipp's ABLC dimpling. Its ZR1 DB hub has 66 engagement points. Those specifications make it a distinct deep-aero option; they do not guarantee a particular bike split or make it the correct front wheel for every rider and forecast.

Who should put this wheelset on the shortlist?

Choose the 808 when the course and your handling confidence justify a deep-section wheelset and the Firecrest specification fits the budget. Consider a shallower front-wheel plan when the expected conditions or your experience call for it. Do not let a matching front-and-rear appearance replace a practical race-day decision.

Zipp 808 Firecrest vs 858 NSW: where does the premium go?

The 808 uses a constant 80 mm rim depth and ZR1 DB hubs. The 858 NSW uses an 82-85 mm Sawtooth profile and ZR1 SL ceramic-bearing hubs. Begin with whether a deep front wheel suits your course and riding confidence, then compare the rim design, hubs and complete-build cost. They are two distinct equipment packages, not interchangeable names for the same wheel.

Compare with Zipp 858 NSW or Zipp 404 Firecrest.

Questions to answer before ordering

Is the 808 Firecrest a solid disc wheel?

No. It is a spoked wheel with an 80 mm-deep rim. Disc-brake describes its brake interface, not a closed rear disc wheel. This listing contains a front and rear wheel.

Will it fit my triathlon bike?

The bike name alone is not enough. Provide its model year, brake type, axle dimensions, cassette and planned tire. A familiar triathlon frame name can span multiple generations with different requirements.

Should every triathlete choose an 80 mm front wheel?

No. We would consider the course, likely conditions and your confidence on the bike before choosing front-wheel depth. A deeper option is not automatically the most appropriate one.

Does the price include a cassette and rotors?

Do not assume it does. Confirm package contents and the cost of the complete installation before comparing two offers. Your existing accessories also need a compatibility check before transfer.
