Zipp 404 S: make your next road upgrade count
The Zipp 404 S is a complete 700c carbon disc-brake wheelset for road riders considering a 50 mm aero upgrade without moving straight into the NSW range. Start here when your priority is a more focused road setup for club rides, fast training and racing, rather than a wheelset intended to cover gravel as well.
What you are buying: A complete front-and-rear wheelset. Select the rear freehub: Shimano / SRAM HG Road or SRAM XDR. Manufacturer model: WH-404-S-A1.
Fitment first: Road and all-road use, not gravel. Zipp recommends TSS-compatible 28-39 mm tires for this model. Confirm the exact tire and size, frame clearance and cassette before ordering.
Hookless setup: 5.0 bar wheel ceiling (approximately 72.5 psi). A lower tire- or size-specific limit may apply; a maximum is not a riding recommendation. Check current Zipp tire compatibility.
Turn the familiar loop into your next goal
The rolling loop after work. The faster weekend group. The road event that finally earns a place on your calendar. The 404 S belongs on the shortlist when those are the rides you are building toward. Its appeal is a focused carbon aero-road platform that leaves you room to choose the tires and finishing details that make the upgrade your own.
A 50 mm rim gives the 404 S a clear aero-road identity, while its 23 mm internal width brings the tire into the design conversation. Zipp pairs that rim with 76/176 hubs and Sapim CX-Sprint spokes. Think of the wheel and compatible tire as one setup: rim shape, tire width and pressure work together, so the best starting point is your actual road riding.

Who should put this wheelset on the shortlist?
Choose the 404 S when you want to step into carbon aero road wheels and still leave room in the budget for the rest of the build. Do not choose it simply because a gravel tire might physically mount. For a mixed-surface plan, start the conversation with the 303 SW or a dedicated XPLR model instead.

Zipp 404 S vs 404 Firecrest: where should your budget go?
The 404 S uses a 50 mm rim and 76/176 hubs; the 404 Firecrest moves to 58 mm and ZR1 DB hubs. That is a meaningful buying distinction, not simply two names for the same wheel. Start with the S for a focused carbon aero upgrade, or investigate Firecrest when the deeper rim and different hub platform are priorities. Compare complete installed setups and the exact generations offered.
Compare with Zipp 404 Firecrest or Zipp 303 SW.
Questions to answer before ordering
Is the 404 S suitable for gravel?
No. Zipp identifies this model for road and all-road use, not gravel. A wider tire recommendation does not change the approved riding category.
Can I use my current 28 mm road tires?
The width alone is not enough. Provide the tire brand, exact model, labeled size and construction. A conventional tube-type road tire is not made compatible with this hookless rim by adding a tube.
Why do I see different Zipp 404 S weights online?
SRAM currently lists 1,585 g on its product page and 1,630 g in its support information. We flag the discrepancy rather than promise a specific saving over your existing wheels. Ask for the weight basis of the configuration being supplied.
Is this the 404 Firecrest?
No. This listing is the 404 S, model WH-404-S-A1. Compare model IDs when checking prices; 404 S, 404 Firecrest, individual wheels and complete pairs are different offers.
